Ultra-modern photovoltaic system on 40,000-square-meter roof top
Porsche AG, Stuttgart, the manufacturer of sporty premium vehicles is making a 40,000-square-meter area on the roof top of its central spare parts warehouse in Sachsenheim (Baden-Wuerttemberg) available for Goldbeck Solar GmbH.
Goldbeck Solar will install and operate system of approximately 8,500 photovoltaic modules there with a nominal output of two megawatts.
The electricity will be fed into the grid of the energy provider E&W Eichwald GmbH, Bietigheim-Bissingen.
“Progressive environmental protection and conservation of resources isn’t only a Porsche priority in production. Our central spare parts warehouse provides the ideal conditions for ecological energy generation,” says Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics of Porsche AG.

The system will be able to generate nearly two million kilowatt hours per year, which is equivalent to the average energy consumption of approximately 500 four-person households. At the same time, approximately 1,780 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be saved every year.

Organized chaos gets robots going

Göttingen scientists develop an autonomous walking robot that flexibly switches between many different gaits by using “chaos control”.
In humans and animals, periodically recurring movements like walking or breathing are controlled by small neural circuits called “central pattern generators” (CPG). Scientists have been using this principle in the development of walking machines. To date, typically one separate CPG was needed for every gait. The robot receives information about its environment via several sensors – about whether there is an obstacle in front of it or whether it climbs a slope. Based on this information, it selects the CPG controlling the gait that is appropriate for the respective situation.
The robot developed by the Göttingen scientists now manages the same task with only one CPG that generates entirely different gaits and which can switch between these gaits in a flexible manner. This CPG is a tiny network consisting of two circuit elements. The secret of its functioning lies in the so-called “chaos control”. If uncontrolled, the CPG produces a chaotic activity pattern. This activity, however, can very easily be controlled by the sensor inputs into periodic patterns that determine the gait. Depending on the sensory input signal, different patterns – and thus different gaits – are generated.

British Airways, in partnership with the Solena Group, is to establish Europe’s first sustainable jet-fuel plant and plans to use the low-carbon fuel to power part of its fleet from 2014.
The new fuel will be derived from waste biomass and manufactured in a state-of-the-art facility that can convert a variety of waste materials, destined for landfill, into aviation fuel.

The self-contained plant, likely to be sited in east London, will convert 500,000 tonnes of waste per year into 16 million gallons of green jet fuel through a process that offers lifecycle greenhouse gas savings of up to 95 per cent compared to fossil-fuel derived jet kerosene.
This volume of fuel would be more than twice the amount required to make all of British Airways’ flights at nearby London City Airport carbon-neutral. The fuel’s reduction in carbon emissions would be the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road per year.
Four sites in the east of London are among those under consideration for the construction of the bio-jet fuel plant. The scheme will lead to the creation of up to 1,200 jobs in the area and could reduce significantly local authority landfill tax bills.

Team “Tarka” will bei Universitätsweltmeisterschaft reüssieren.
