Cell phones could double as night vision devices
Call it Nitelite: The newest app for cell phones might be night vision.

A University of Florida engineering researcher has crafted a nickel-sized imaging device that uses organic light-emitting diode technology similar to that found in cell phone or laptop screens for night vision. But unlike night vision goggles, which are heavy and expensive, the device is paper-thin, light and inexpensive, making it a possible add-on to cell phone cameras, even eyeglasses, once it is enlarged.

Sunlight with cooling factor

Although it sounds like a contradiction in terms, using the power of the sun for refrigeration is proving to be an original energy concept. In Tunisia and Morocco, Fraunhofer research scientists are using solar energy to keep perishable foodstuffs such as milk, wine and fruit fresh.

»Refrigerated by sunlight« – we could well see an ecostatement like this printed on food packaging in the years ahead. Solar energy is already being used to power air-conditioning systems in buildings, but now researchers also want to refrigerate fruit and other perishable foodstuffs using energy from the sun.

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg are demonstrating that this is feasible in the Mediterranean region using the examples of a winery in Tunisia and a dairy in Morocco. In the MEDISCO project (short for MEDiterranean food and agro Industry applications of Solar COoling technologies) solar plants for refrigerating milk and wine have been installed in cooperation with universities, energy agencies and European companies. The project funded by the European Commission is run by the Polytechnic University of Milan.

German company launches their own ‘iPad’

A small German company is taking on US giant Apple with its own version of the iPad. Neofonie which is based in Berlin has design the WePad which is a touch-screen computer. The WePad is designed by the medium sized firm of 180 staff and is being manufactured in Asia.
Helmut Hofer von Ankershoffen, Neofonie’s manager says things are already looking positive, “we already have more than 20,000 pre-order registrations directly from consumers who are saying: I am going to buy that thing as soon as possible, just tell me when I can have it.”
Prices for the “WePad” start at 449 euros for a Wi-Fi device with 16GB while the 32 GB version with Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS and full HD video costs 569 euros.

Solar electricity from the Porsche plant

Ultra-modern photovoltaic system on 40,000-square-meter roof top
Porsche AG, Stuttgart, the manufacturer of sporty premium vehicles is making a 40,000-square-meter area on the roof top of its central spare parts warehouse in Sachsenheim (Baden-Wuerttemberg) available for Goldbeck Solar GmbH.
Goldbeck Solar will install and operate system of approximately 8,500 photovoltaic modules there with a nominal output of two megawatts.
The electricity will be fed into the grid of the energy provider E&W Eichwald GmbH, Bietigheim-Bissingen.
“Progressive environmental protection and conservation of resources isn’t only a Porsche priority in production. Our central spare parts warehouse provides the ideal conditions for ecological energy generation,” says Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics of Porsche AG.

The system will be able to generate nearly two million kilowatt hours per year, which is equivalent to the average energy consumption of approximately 500 four-person households. At the same time, approximately 1,780 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be saved every year.
